Away from home turf

A season anchored to one fixed set can only prove so much about a cast on its own turf, so a handful of formats reach for the same fix — pull everyone out of the house, the brokerage, the city, for a week. The trip works precisely because there's nowhere familiar left to hide.

The 15, in order.

  1. #01

A Caribbean group trip turns a solid season into the franchise's defining hour

The New York episodes hold their own, but a trip to St. John pushes the format somewhere it hadn't gone before — specific, strange, and unscripted enough that the trip becomes forever known as Scary Island.
  2. #02

The format invents the group-travel episode before it even has a name for it

Season two is still assembling its own machinery — the confessional room, a mid-season cast swap — and a group excursion abroad late in the run becomes the rough draft every later group-trip episode would refine.
  3. #03

A decade in, the group trip is just part of the house style

New Orleans runs every established piece of the format at once — a group job, a franchise crossover, and a trip to South Africa that plays less like a novelty and more like a toolkit the show is finally sure of.
  4. #04

Morocco strips away the city and leaves the cast nowhere to hide

A new housewife joins a cast already running hot, and a trip to Marrakesh removes every social safety valve Manhattan usually provides. Dense and occasionally exhausting — the format at its most committed, not its most comfortable.
  5. #05

Athens becomes the visual centerpiece of the show's longest run

Twenty-seven episodes is a long season to carry, and a golden-era cast with dynamics already running deep does it partly by trading Atlanta for a stretch in Greece — a set piece the Atlanta scenes hold their own against.
  6. #06

One season, two group trips, and neither one goes easy

A new housewife settles into an established cast the same year the format sends everyone to Hong Kong and Dubai — backdrops with none of Beverly Hills' usual social infrastructure to lean on when things get tense.
  7. #07

Cartagena is the farthest this format has pushed a cast it already trusts

A decade of shared history gives the New York scenes real weight, and a trip to Cartagena — the show's most distant yet — pulls the cast far enough from home turf to test what that history is actually built on.
  8. #08

The French Riviera gives Potomac its first trip of real scale

A new full-time housewife joins the same season the cast leaves Maryland behind for a multi-episode stretch abroad — the biggest the franchise had staged for this cast, closed out by a rare two-part reunion.
  9. #09

A new-era cast gets its first away-from-home stress test in two countries

Erika Girardi's system-shifting arrival dominates the headlines, but the format runs its real test elsewhere — a stretch in Amsterdam and the Cayman Islands that strips away every piece of the city's social infrastructure the cast usually leans on.
  10. #10

A cast still settling gets the franchise's best travel itinerary in years

Denise Richards arrives as a full Housewife the same season Rome and Paris put the group about as far from Beverly Hills as this format has traveled — atmospheric turf a still-reshuffling cast leans on to find its new footing.
  11. #11

A cast built on relocated wealth gets pulled somewhere even less familiar

Dubai's expat social world is already unmoored from any single home country, and a mid-season getaway pulls the founding six further still from their controlled environment — a stress test on a cast barely a season old.
  12. #12

Bali is the swing that makes the sophomore season feel earned

Five of the founding six return, one new full-timer joins, and a mid-season trip to Bali becomes the real hinge — proof the format's move to the Gulf wasn't an idea that couldn't survive leaving Dubai.
  13. #13

The group trip stops being a set piece and starts setting up the twist

An early trip does the format's usual scene-setting work here, but it also doubles as the mechanism that sets the season's namesake twist in motion — the device repurposed as plot engine, not just a change of scenery.
  14. #14

The season that skips its own centerpiece, and the gap shows

No international trip, a shorter episode order, and a new housewife whose register never quite lands — season eight is the clearest evidence of how much editorial weight the device usually carries, made visible by its absence.
  15. #15

Dropping the international leg costs the format its strongest engine

Cycle 13 swaps the usual trip abroad for domestic-only locations and narrows the cast around an explicit height cap. Both bets read as novelty rather than depth — proof that annual stretch overseas was doing real editorial work.
