Aired fall 2009 · The CW · explicit height cap, no international trip

The Height Experiment

Cycle 13 centers on two simultaneous format decisions: an explicit 5'7" or shorter height cap and filming entirely within the United States, trading the international leg for domestic locations across LA, Las Vegas, and Maui.

01The take

The Height Experiment.

The gimmick overwhelms the competition — the height restriction produces novelty but not a stronger season.
02The shape of the season

A rhythm worth tracking.

Cycle 13 is the CW era's clearest format miscalculation. The explicit height cap narrows the contestant pool in ways that limit competitive range rather than deepen it. Staying entirely domestic removes the format's strongest creative engine, and the reduction to three judges strips the critique sessions of texture. The domestic locations — LA, Las Vegas, Maui — are visually attractive but not editorial in the way the international legs consistently were.

03Where it sits in the canon

The #15 slot.

Slot #15 of 15 in the America's Next Top Model Editor's Canon. The seasons on either side show what I ranked it against.
