tiered.tv's editor. I've watched The Real World since the SoHo loft debut in 1992, the season every later season — and arguably every reality show since — has been quietly copying. This ranking is one editor's read on format history and casting energy, not a claim of objectivity.

How I weigh it

I rank on format influence, casting chemistry, and how well a city and cast combine to make a season worth watching decades later. With only the debut seeded, this canon is a baseline — thirty-two more seasons of city, cast, and format evolution are still waiting to be argued into order.

03 · WHEN

When I revisit

The canon moves whenever a new season gets seeded, and whenever the community vote makes a strong enough case to reorder. The show is dormant now — no numbered season since 2019, no Homecoming revival since 2022 — but the ranking will keep growing as older seasons get their turn.

The origin point — the season that invented the modern reality-TV format before the genre had a name.

New York is the only entry so far, and it's the only possible call at #1. This is the season that proved strangers living together on camera could carry a show at all — MTV borrowed the structure from a 1970s PBS documentary and built a genre out of it. The loft is small, the format is unrefined, and nobody involved seems fully aware they're inventing something that will still define reality TV decades later. That rawness is exactly the appeal. Every polished season this show and its imitators would go on to produce owes its DNA to this one.
