01The take
The Original.
A business competition with real stakes — a job, not a brand, at the end of the table.
02The shape of the season
A rhythm worth tracking.
Sixteen contestants split into two teams, set to work on a business task each week, then brought into Trump's boardroom to account for what happened. The format invented itself on NBC in January 2004 and the cast played it straight — no celebrity leverage, no self-referential posturing. The tasks were grounded, the boardroom had weight, and the show's grammar was built cleanly. Every season after runs inside the vocabulary this one wrote.
03Where it sits in the canon
The #01 slot.
Slot #01 of 5 in the The Apprentice Editor's Canon. The seasons on either side show what I ranked it against.
