Aired summer 2013 · Third season of the Stern-era panel

The Long Third Year

The Stern–Osbourne–Mandel lineup runs its third consecutive season. The panel chemistry is intact, but three years together brings diminishing surprise — the format settles into a familiar groove.

01The take

The Long Third Year.

A functional season from a panel that still does its job well — just without the edge that made the first two years feel like something had changed.
02The shape of the season

A rhythm worth tracking.

Season eight is the Stern-era panel at its most routine. Howard Stern, Sharon Osbourne, and Howie Mandel are still a strong judging table — chemistry real, critique honest — but three seasons together has filed down the friction that made the first year feel like a reset. The audition circuit runs familiar patterns, the live rounds move without surprise, and nothing pushes the format forward. Functional and settled, from a panel that did its defining work earlier.

03Where it sits in the canon

The #10 slot.

Slot #10 of 20 in the America's Got Talent Editor's Canon. The seasons on either side show what I ranked it against.
