01The take

The Standard Cycle.

The ABC revival in steady state — a season that knew what it was and delivered exactly that.
02The shape of the season

A rhythm worth tracking.

Season twenty-one is the ABC revival in its most settled state. Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan ran their sixth cycle without format changes or panel disruption. The audition circuit produced a competitive field. The Hollywood round narrowed to a live competition that ran its standard arc. Nothing distinguished the season from the surrounding years — which is either a mark of format stability or evidence that the ABC cycle had reached a ceiling. Both things can be true.

03Where it sits in the canon

The #21 slot.

Slot #21 of 23 in the American Idol Editor's Canon. The seasons on either side show what I ranked it against.
