Season twenty marks the show's 20th anniversary with retrospective framing. Returning alumni appeared in promotional and broadcast contexts. Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan ran the competition in their settled rhythm. The milestone generated attention the format hadn't earned on recent content alone. The anniversary did real work; the competition behind it was solid rather than exceptional.
