01The take

The Network Return.

A new network, three new judges, and the highest ABC-era ratings the show would see — the revival landing as a genuine television event.
02The shape of the season

A rhythm worth tracking.

American Idol returns on ABC with Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan handling critique for the first time. The fresh panel brought different aesthetics — pop, soul, and country — and the premiere drew strong numbers on the strength of that novelty. Audition rounds included stops in Hawaii, adding a location element the Fox seasons rarely attempted. The debut season energy carried through the live rounds. The format felt genuinely renewed rather than revived.

03Where it sits in the canon

The #15 slot.

Slot #15 of 23 in the American Idol Editor's Canon. The seasons on either side show what I ranked it against.
