01The take

The Friction.

The panel friction outran the competition — a season remembered more for the judging table than the stage.
02The shape of the season

A rhythm worth tracking.

Season twelve features the most turbulent judging panel in American Idol's run. Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey's on-camera friction was covered extensively in entertainment press before the season aired and continued throughout. Keith Urban was present as a working judge; Randy Jackson shifted to a mentor role mid-season. The contestant competition ran in parallel with the panel drama, but the drama is what viewers remember. Ratings fell. The season documents what happens when the panel becomes the show.

03Where it sits in the canon

The #16 slot.

Slot #16 of 23 in the American Idol Editor's Canon. The seasons on either side show what I ranked it against.
