Snoop Dogg and Michael Bublé debut — the format's most eclectic panel yet

The Wild Card

Season twenty-seven assembled the most tonally varied panel in the show's history: Snoop Dogg and Michael Bublé debuting alongside Reba McEntire and Gwen Stefani. The novelty was genuine, though the range produced more comedy than competitive heat.

01The take

The Wild Card.

Hip-hop, swing, country, and pop — a coaching combination the show had never attempted.
02The shape of the season

A rhythm worth tracking.

Season twenty-seven went for broke on coaching variety. Snoop Dogg and Michael Bublé arriving together gave the blind auditions a genuinely unpredictable quality — their musical instincts diverge more sharply than any prior two-debut season — and the entertainment value of watching them recruit was high. But variety and competitive intensity are different things, and the season generated more spectacle than urgency. Reba McEntire and Gwen Stefani anchored the panel while the two newcomers brought the noise.

03Where it sits in the canon

The #27 slot.

Slot #27 of 29 in the The Voice Editor's Canon. The seasons on either side show what I ranked it against.
