A revival on new ground.
A revival of a format the canon already rates, on a new platform, with a cross-franchise cast. The premise is strong; the season still has to earn the slot.
Three teams, one Arena.
Season forty-two brings back Cutthroat, the three-team format the franchise first ran in 2010. Twenty-four players, split evenly between men and women, are drafted onto three teams in Thailand, with team dailies feeding a nomination process and one elimination round, the Arena. It is the first flagship season released on Paramount+ rather than MTV, one episode a week after a two-episode opener. TJ Lavin hosts, and the prize is a share of $500,000.
The #35 slot.
Slot #35 of 42 in the Challenge Editor's Canon. Cutthroat sits thirty-fifth as a provisional read on premise alone. The original three-team season is one of the canon's better-regarded format experiments, and this revival keeps its core: a draft builds the teams, team dailies drive nominations, and a single elimination round settles each week. The cast mixes long-time franchise names with players from Survivor, Big Brother, The Amazing Race and Love Island USA, and the move to Paramount+ gives the season a fresh production home in Thailand. None of that is proof yet. The slot holds until the final airs, then the season earns its real position.
3 moments, no spoilers.
- Ep 1 · the draft
Teams are built by draft rather than assigned, so the opener shows who the cast values before a single daily is run. Watch the pick order; it says a lot about reputations.
- Format · men's and women's rounds
Each elimination is designated a men's or women's round, which shapes how a team protects its own. Watch how nomination talk changes depending on which side of the roster is exposed.
- Casting · outside the franchise
The field draws on Survivor, Big Brother, The Amazing Race, Love Island USA, Cheer and more, alongside Real World and Are You the One? names. Watch how the outsiders read a team format built on owing people favors.
