MTV's first attempt at the season-versus-season format. Instead of one Real World team against one Road Rules team, the show grouped cast by their original season — a structural idea the franchise would return to for the rest of its run.

A rhythm worth tracking.

The season that introduced the season-versus-season structure the franchise still uses. Rather than one Real World team and one Road Rules team, MTV grouped contestants by their original season — turning old roommates into teammates and old cast rivalries into team rivalries. The pacing is uneven and the team count is large, but the structural idea here would echo through every Battle of the Seasons that followed.
