Season 1

Five investors, a folding table, and entrepreneurs with a few minutes to make their case — Shark Tank's first season is short, plain, and confident about a format nobody else on American television was running yet.

01The take

A format with no second draft.

A five-shark panel and a premise — real money on the table, minutes to convince it — that needed no second draft.
02The shape of the season

A rhythm worth tracking.

Shark Tank's first season is lean and untested — seven episodes, a five-shark panel of Kevin Harrington, Barbara Corcoran, Kevin O'Leary, Daymond John, and Robert Herjavec, and entrepreneurs pitching without knowing yet that this show would become appointment television. The tank set is smaller, the questioning less refined, but the premise — real money, real stakes, minutes to make the case — lands fully formed from the first pitch.

03Where it sits in the canon

The #01 slot.

Sole entry in the Shark Tank Editor's Canon so far. Season one earns the top slot because it's the version of Shark Tank before the format knew what it was. Five sharks — Kevin Harrington, Barbara Corcoran, Kevin O'Leary, Daymond John, and Robert Herjavec — sit across from entrepreneurs with a folding-table set and a premise ABC hadn't tested on American audiences: real investors risking real money on camera, no script for how blunt the questioning should get. Seven episodes is a short freshman run, but the tension the show would spend years refining is already the whole engine here. Every panel change and set upgrade since has been in service of what this debut got right immediately.
