Fans and Favourites.
A mixed cast with an interesting structural premise — Fans versus Favourites until they're not — and a Tasmanian off-site that's among the format's most striking location choices.
A rhythm worth tracking.
Season fourteen structures its cast as Fans against Favourites — twelve new contestants and twelve returning competitors running separate tracks until Week 6. The split gives the early episodes a clear competitive dynamic, and the merge reshapes the field in ways both groups have to adapt. Tasmania's off-site challenges — Great Oyster Bay and a truffle farm — are among the most distinctive location choices the new era has made. A structurally interesting season that doesn't quite reach its best.
The #13 slot.
Slot #13 of 16 in the MasterChef Australia Editor's Canon. The seasons on either side show what I ranked it against.
4 moments, no spoilers.
- Fans vs. Favourites opening weeks
The two groups run parallel tracks in the early episodes. The Fans arrive with enthusiasm but less competitive experience; the Favourites have a structural advantage the format makes explicit.
- Week 6 merge
When the two groups merge, the competitive dynamic resets. Contestants who excelled in the initial split have to re-establish themselves against a combined field.
- Tasmania off-site
Great Oyster Bay and a Launceston truffle farm offer produce and culinary context the Melbourne studio can't replicate. Tasmania's setting is one of the format's most visually and gastronomically interesting location choices.
- Marco, Heston, Adriano Zumbo
Three of the founding era's most challenging guest presences return in the same season. The returning Favourites will have some familiarity with their styles; the Fans encounter them fresh.
