Series 12 (Summer 2025)

The shake-up summer. Series 12 arrived with production publicly tearing up the rulebook — a blind launch coupling, an always-open hideaway, and cameras rolling through mealtimes for the first time — a direct answer to a real conversation about the show's numbers.

01The take

The rulebook gets torn up.

The format's boldest single-summer overhaul, betting on real structural risk instead of another twist stacked on top.
02The shape of the season

The first season counted in weeks.

Series 12 arrives as the format's most self-critical summer yet. Facing a real conversation about declining numbers, production tore up long-standing mechanics rather than adding another twist on top: the launch coupling goes in blind, the hideaway opens for anyone uncoupled, and cameras finally catch the villa at mealtimes. Maya Jama returns for a third summer in the Mallorca chair, presiding over a season built to test whether the show can still surprise itself.

03Where it sits in the canon

The #07 slot.

Slot #07 of 13 in the Love Island UK Editor's Canon. Series 12 sits below Series 9 because ambition and proof are different arguments — Series 9 is a winter reset that had already worked by the time the credits rolled, while Series 12's overhaul arrives mid-decline with its verdict still open, a swing the canon can respect without yet calling a win. It ranks above Series 6, though, because the stakes are bigger and the swing is wider: Series 6 tested whether the format could survive a new continent and a new host, while Series 12 rewrites coupling, privacy and pacing inside the mainline summer edition itself. A larger risk taken in the format that matters most outranks a smaller one taken in its off-season branch.

04What to watch for

4 moments, no spoilers.

  • Ep 1 · Launch coupling

The first coupling replaced the usual live line-up: girls picked a partner sight-unseen from written dating profiles before the boys were even revealed.

  • Ep 1 · New villa rules

A tighter banned-items list — no watches, no clocks, no branded clothing — was designed to blur the sense of time and cut down on outside references.

  • Format · The hideaway

The hideaway stopped being an occasional reward and opened continuously for any pair not yet officially coupled up — a real change to how privacy works in the villa.

  • Format · Mealtimes

Cameras rolled through mealtimes for the first time this series, catching villa conversation that used to happen entirely off-camera.
