Series 2 is the bridge between the format's rough start and its breakout, sitting inside the original era's most important stretch; Series 9 is a strong reset of a format that only exists because the original era worked first. Both matter for what came after them, but one is foundational to the show's main line and the other is foundational to a secondary edition of it. It's a close call — Series 9 may be the better hour-for-hour watch — but connective tissue to the main story outranks connective tissue to the winter offshoot.
