Houseguest Decides

The season the format clicked. Twelve houseguests move in, and for the first time the houseguests do the evicting — the public-vote experiment is gone, and the show finds the engine it would run on for a quarter-century. The pacing tightens to a thrice-weekly rhythm. The cast plays harder because the stakes are now interpersonal, not televised. Julie Chen settles into her cadence. Slot #07 of 27 in the Big Brother Editor's Canon. Seventh, the clearest case in the canon for foundational weight without peak execution. Every season ranked above it — both all-star casts, the alliance-era pivot, the veteran-and-newbies blueprint, the coaches experiment — runs on the engine this summer installed, but installing an engine and driving it well are different achievements, and the six seasons above it simply did more with the format once it existed. It still ranks above Battle of the Block and everything twist-stacked below, because raw format weight beats a crowded rule book. The middle of the canon starts here: everything below this slot gets judged on execution rather than on origin.
