The Settled Run.
Three years of the same panel produces the most competent and least surprising version of this era — the format works, and that is enough.
A rhythm worth tracking.
Season eighteen is the settled middle of a multi-year configuration — familiar faces, practiced rhythms, no structural change to push the format. Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Sofia Vergara, and Howie Mandel have now run together long enough that the judging table operates smoothly rather than dynamically. The audition pool delivers variety acts across a wide range of disciplines, and Terry Crews moves through the hosting duties with ease. Competent in every respect and rarely more than that.
The #19 slot.
Slot #19 of 20 in the America's Got Talent Editor's Canon. The seasons on either side show what I ranked it against.
