01The take

The Expansion.

The format at its most ambitious — more cities, more episodes, and production that aimed higher than it had before.
02The shape of the season

A rhythm worth tracking.

Season four extends the format in nearly every direction — more audition cities, a longer studio run, higher production ambition. The original panel brought the chemistry that made season three work, and there are stretches where the competition runs at a high level. What keeps it fifth in the founding canon is a field that didn't sustain the depth of the seasons above it. The expansion showed what Idol could scale to; the field didn't match it.

03Where it sits in the canon

The #05 slot.

Slot #05 of 5 in the American Idol Editor's Canon. The seasons on either side show what I ranked it against.
